How to use Pushbuild Connect
Short how-tos and fixes for common problems. If you get stuck, write to us in Chat or at hello@pushbuild.com.
1. Install it and sign in
- Sign in to your account, open Connect and click Windows or Mac. That download is already set up for your company.
- Open what you downloaded and follow the installer. On Windows, Edge may say the file "isn't commonly downloaded": click …, then Keep, then Keep anyway.
- Open Pushbuild Connect and press Connect. Or type your work email, press Email me a link, and open the link we send you.
▶ Watch the Windows install (1 minute) · ▶ Watch the Mac install (2 minutes)
It lives next to the clock (Windows) or in the menu bar (Mac). Closing the window keeps it running there. On your first day a checklist waits in the chat: tick each line as you go; some tick themselves. ▶ How the checklist works (40 seconds)
2. Show us how you do a task
- When we ask you to show us something, a card appears in the app. Read it, then press Show me how (or Start recording): recording starts.
- Do that step the way you always do. A small Recording for Pushbuild box sits in the corner of your screen.
- Press Done in that box. The next step appears in a few seconds.
Press Not now to skip a step. Passwords you type are never recorded. Recordings are kept for 30 days.
3. Chat, files and logins
- Open Chat in the app or in your account: it's the same conversation in both. The buttons under the message box add a file, a screenshot or part of your screen.
- Files: drop them into Chat or onto Files. Google Drive or Sheets: File → Download first, or paste the share link.
- + → Share a login or password: it's locked to your computer, and we can type it in for you without ever seeing it.
4. Let us help, and stop us any time
- At Ask me first (where you start) we ask before we begin, with Allow and Not now.
- While we work, a bar says so. Press Stop, or Esc three times. Move the mouse or type and we pause.
- In Settings choose Chat only, Ask me first or Go ahead, whenever you like.
How-to videos
If something goes wrong
- Windows says "Windows protected your PC"
- Press More info, then Run anyway. This screen goes away once our signing certificate is in place.
- Giving access on a Mac
- A Mac needs two switches before we can see or help, and the app walks you through them. By hand: open System Settings → Privacy & Security (older Macs: System Preferences → Security & Privacy → Privacy) and turn on Pushbuild Connect under Screen & System Audio Recording (older Macs: Screen Recording) and under Accessibility (not listed? press + and pick it from Applications). Then quit and reopen the app. On a work Mac, your IT team may need to allow it. Watch how
- Giving access on Linux
- On Ubuntu's standard desktop, your computer asks the first time we look or help. Choose the screen and press Share, then press Allow for remote interaction.
- I can't find the app
- Windows: press the ^ next to the clock and click the Pushbuild icon. Mac: click the Pushbuild icon in the menu bar at the top.
- The task card isn't there
- Open the app window. Cards show up within a few seconds of us sending them. If not, quit and reopen the app.
- It says "Can't reach Pushbuild right now"
- Check your internet connection. It keeps trying by itself and catches up when you're back online.
- A saved login stopped working after you reinstalled
- Logins are locked to one computer and installation. Send the login again from Chat.
More questions
- What Pushbuild can see and do
- Open the app and choose Settings: pick how much we may do, turn each switch on or off, and see everything that was sent under What was sent. Watch how
- What "Learn how my web apps work" does
- When it's on, and only while we're working with you, the browser notes the requests a web app makes behind each click, so we can automate that task. The bar on the page says Pushbuild is learning this site while it runs. Passwords, cookies and sign-in details are hidden. It starts off; turn it on under Connect in your account.
- When Pushbuild asks about something on your screen
- We may draw a box around something and ask about it, for example "What is this number?". Type your answer in the small card next to the box and press Send, or Not sure. The question, a picture of that spot and your answer go into your chat, so everyone knows what it was about.
- Step-by-step help on your screen
- To show you how to do something, we can mark each step on your screen: "Click Export here". Do the step and the next one appears. Back goes to the step before, Skip moves on, Stop ends it. We never click for you in these steps.
- Using the app and Pushbuild in your browser together
- If both are on the same computer, they find each other on their own and show as one computer under Connect ("Same computer as …"). Nothing to set up. Each still has its own on/off switches.
- Audit: finding what we could take off your plate
- If you turn it on (Your tools in your account, then Turn on on each computer or browser), for a week Pushbuild notes the programs and pages you use and the steps you take: which buttons, which fields, files you open, emails you handle (who from, the subject). Never what you type, never passwords. Pushbuild is auditing shows the whole time, with Pause. You see your week first under Your tools: name what you were doing, mark what's tedious, and delete anything private. We see it a day later. Turn on Mask my details to keep only the shape of names, numbers and emails. Watch how
