Common jobs worth automating
- Tagging and routing orders by product, value, country or risk
- Keeping inventory in step with your POS, warehouse, Amazon or wholesale channel
- Sending orders to your 3PL or ShipStation, and tracking numbers back
- Customer emails and texts for shipping, delays and reviews through Klaviyo
- Posting daily sales, fees and refunds to QuickBooks or Xero
- Low-stock alerts and purchase order drafts for your suppliers
Shopify Flow, an app, or custom?
Start with Shopify Flow for rules inside the store, like tagging, hiding sold-out products or alerting staff. Use a well-reviewed app when a common job has a good one, such as reviews or returns. Choose a custom integration when you need to connect a system without an app, apply your own business rules, or the apps you are stacking start to conflict and slow the store.
Watch out for
- Two apps that both edit inventory or orders, which cause stock counts to drift
- Rate limits during sales, when flows need to queue rather than fail
- Apps that inject scripts into your theme and slow it down
How to start
Write down the five things your team does after an order arrives and how long each takes. Pick the one with the most hours or the most mistakes. If orders, refunds and fees reach your accounting by hand, that is often the best first job; see QuickBooks automation.

Questions people ask first
Does Shopify Flow cost extra?
Flow is available on most current Shopify plans. Check your plan in the Shopify admin.
Can you connect Shopify to our warehouse system?
Yes, through the warehouse's API, EDI or file drops, with orders sent out and stock and tracking sent back.
Will it slow down my store?
Integrations that run on the server side do not touch your storefront. Only theme apps add weight to pages.
Do you work with Shopify Plus?
Yes. Plus adds more options for checkout and automation, but the same approach applies.
