Let the crawlers in
Each tool reads the web with its own crawler. OpenAI documents OAI-SearchBot as the one used for ChatGPT search, separate from GPTBot, which collects training data. Perplexity uses PerplexityBot, and Google's AI answers come from ordinary Googlebot crawling.
Shopify generates robots.txt for you and allows these by default. Problems usually come from a customised robots.txt.liquid file, or from a firewall, bot-protection app or CDN rule that blocks unknown crawlers. If OAI-SearchBot is blocked, ChatGPT search cannot read your pages, however good they are.
Give every product page complete structured data
Most current Shopify themes print Product JSON-LD on product pages, but often only the name, image, price and stock status. AI shopping tools and Google both do better with the full picture:
- An Offer with price, currency and availability for each variant
- Brand and SKU
- A GTIN (barcode) or MPN (part number), so the exact item can be matched
- AggregateRating from your review app, if you show reviews
- Shipping details and your return policy
Variants matter. Google's documentation describes ProductGroup markup for products sold in several sizes or colours, so each variant is listed with its own price and stock. A theme switch or a new review app can quietly remove some of this, so check again after either.
Write the facts shoppers ask about
AI answers quote what a page actually says. A description that is all mood and no detail gives them nothing to work with. State material, dimensions, fit, compatibility, care, what is in the box and who the product is for, in your own words. Shopify metafields are a good home for these details, so they appear in the same place on every product and can be added to the markup.
Answer the common questions on the page itself; see product FAQ markup for how to mark them up.
Product feeds and channels
Structured data is not the only route in. Google Merchant Center takes a product feed for free listings across Google, and the Google & YouTube app for Shopify keeps that feed in sync. OpenAI and Shopify have both announced ways for merchants to share product catalogues with AI chat tools directly. What is available changes quickly and can depend on your plan and country, so check OpenAI's merchant pages and the Shopify Help Center for the current options.
How to check your store
Run the free AI shopping check. It reads a sample of your product pages the way a crawler does, grades the structured data, attributes and FAQ markup, and flags a robots.txt that shuts the AI crawlers out. For a single page, Google's Rich Results Test shows exactly what markup it finds. If you would rather have the gaps filled across the whole catalogue, see AI shopping readiness.

Questions people ask first
Can I pay to have my products appear in ChatGPT?
ChatGPT's shopping results are not paid placements, according to OpenAI. Clear, complete product pages and a crawler that can reach them are what you control.
Should I block GPTBot?
That is your choice. OpenAI's documentation treats GPTBot (training) and OAI-SearchBot (search) separately, so you can block one and allow the other. Blocking OAI-SearchBot keeps your pages out of ChatGPT search.
Does my Shopify theme already add product markup?
Most current themes add some. Open a product page in Google's Rich Results Test to see which fields are there and which are missing.
How long until changes show up?
It depends on how often each tool recrawls your store. Google Search Console shows when Google last crawled a page; other tools do not publish this.
