How to stop an n8n agent calling the same tool every time

If an n8n Agent node calls the same tool at the start of every run, prompt instructions rarely stop it. When a model can see a tool that looks useful, it often calls it first to orient itself. The dependable fix is to change what the agent can see.

At a glance

  1. Remove the tool from the agentIf the tool comes from an MCP Client Tool node, set Tools to Include to Selected, or to All Except with that tool excluded.
  2. Keep it for when it's neededPut the tool in a sub-agent or a separate tool node with a narrow description, such as "Only use when the user asks about their own account."
  3. Know whose data it returnsA get_current_user tool belongs to the connected app's API.

Remove the tool from the agent

  • If the tool comes from an MCP Client Tool node, set Tools to Include to Selected, or to All Except with that tool excluded.
  • The agent can't call a tool it doesn't see.

Keep it for when it's needed

  • Put the tool in a sub-agent or a separate tool node with a narrow description, such as "Only use when the user asks about their own account."
  • Models tend to follow a tool's own description more closely than a general instruction in the system prompt.

Know whose data it returns

  • A get_current_user tool belongs to the connected app's API. It returns the owner of the credential the node uses, the same person on every run.
  • To know who is chatting, pass the user's identity from the trigger, for example the chat session metadata.

Questions people ask first

Why does the system prompt not stop it?

Models weigh tool descriptions heavily. A tool that looks generally useful gets called early, whatever the prompt says.

Does this cost anything?

Each unneeded tool call is another model round trip, so removing it makes runs faster and cheaper.
