Turn it back on
- Set the environment variable NODES_EXCLUDE to a list that leaves out the node. To allow every node: NODES_EXCLUDE="[]"
- To keep Local File Trigger off and allow only Execute Command: NODES_EXCLUDE="[\"n8n-nodes-base.localFileTrigger\"]"
- In Docker, add it under environment in docker-compose.yml, then recreate the container so it reads the new value. A restart from inside n8n is not enough.
- n8n Cloud does not offer these nodes. They are for self-hosted instances only.
Before you do
- Anyone who can edit workflows can then run commands as the user n8n runs as. Limit who has edit access.
- In Docker, commands run inside the container, so tools you need (curl, python, ffmpeg) must be installed in the image, not just on the host.
- If you only need to read or write files, the Read/Write Files from Disk node may be enough and is safer.
If it still does not appear
- Check the variable reached the container: docker exec <container> env | grep NODES_EXCLUDE
- Check the value is valid JSON, with double quotes inside the list.
- Reload the editor page after the container restarts.

Questions people ask first
Is it safe to enable?
It is as safe as the people who can edit workflows. Treat edit access as shell access to the server.
Can I run commands on the host, not the container?
Not directly. Use SSH from the node, or the SSH node, to reach the host.
Does this work on n8n Cloud?
No. Cloud instances cannot run shell commands.
